The Model Standards for Student Development are the result of an ongoing project of the nonprofit, nonpartisan Josephson Institute of Ethics to provide educators with a comprehensive, fully integrated statement of what educators can and should do to create a positive school culture and prepare students to:
1. succeed in school (including post-secondary education),
2. succeed in the workplace,
3. become engaged, ethical, and productive citizens, and
4. live happy, worthy, and fulfilling personal lives.
These Model Standards specify four types of educational outcomes:
1. Knowledge
2. Beliefs, Values, and Mindsets
3. Skills
4. Traits
This Model Standards resource along with the Implementation Guidelines allows for educators to tailor expected outcomes to each student’s developmental stage and individual capacities with developmentally appropriate strategies.
Michael Josephson founded The Josephson Institute in 1987 in honor of his parents, Joseph and Edna, and focused on youth, sportsmanship, business, public service, and policing.
CHARACTER COUNTS! was created by the Josephson Institute in 1992 with the input of 17 nationally prominent youth-serving and educational organizations.

For products purchased directly from Drake University/CHARACTER COUNTS!, credit card payment is the fastest and easiest way to order. Securely pay using Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover. Please note, credit card statements will state processing by “Drake Uni Ray Center.”
Purchase Order (PO)
All domestic, non-express orders are shipped via UPS ground service. Please allow 1-2 weeks for processing and delivery. Delivery time may be extended during peak periods, which include but are not limited to April – June and August – October. Customers are responsible for return shipping fees if packages are refused.
Shipping costs are subject to change. Additional charges may be incurred based on products ordered, product weight, or shipment location. Please contact Customer Service at customerservice@charactercounts.org for school-wide or district order shipping quotes.
